Make yourself a Brand!!- lessons from the episode "developer journey ft. Manjula Dube" on podcast "thinkingwithtanay"

A couple of days back I came across this episode called "Developer Journey ft. Manjula Dube" on the podcast "thinkingwithtanay" on Spotify. In this episode Manjula tells about her journey of becoming a developer. I would like to share some valuable lessons that I learnt from the podcast.

1. Self Learning:- In the podcast she recalls how in the first company where she worked, she was given a task which she didn't know how to do at first but after two weeks she completed the task successfully and was extremely happy as she did it all by herself.

She mentions that the thrill you get through learning yourself keeps on motivating you and makes you go on.

2. Don't go after a company:- She tells how despite having offers from Infosys, Wipro and a few other big companies she decided to join a much smaller company because in a big company she won't get much to learn(what she was looking for).

She advises to look what you will learn in the company, what knowledge you'll gain there which will help you in your career.

3. Make yourself a Brand!!:- Throughout the podcast one thing that she repeatedly emphasizes on is self grooming and making yourself a brand. She advices to invest time in yourselves and to self learn.

4. Degree doesn't matter:- In the podcast she told how due to some problems she was unable to pursue B-tech and had to study BSc but that didn't dither her and she learned coding through an institute and from online resources.

She says that now a days there are so many online websites and other resources that one can self-learn and take help from the community.

5. Few other notable things she speaks about:-

  • Stay updated with technologies.
  • Follow people who belong to your domain for inspiration on twitter and other platforms but see what works best for you.
  • Do open source contributions or write blogs etc., this makes you stand out among others.
  • Stay focused.
